
Global iodine production
Global iodine production in 2023 exceeded 30,000 tons and continues to rise. Due to limited resources, only eight countries produce this strategic element, with Chile being the largest producer worldwide, followed by Japan, Turkmenistan, and Iran. Iodine is considered a vital mineral because of its importance in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Its global market is expected to experience significant growth by 2030.
Global iodine production in 2023 was over 30,000 tons in the form of elemental iodine (I2) and has been on an upward trend ever since. Due to the scarcity of iodine resources in the world, only 8 countries produce this strategic mineral. According to Statista, in 2024 Chile is the largest producer of iodine in the world, followed by Japan, Turkmenistan and Iran.
